SAE Compliance for Lighting

Since the 1930s, the SAE Lighting Standards Committee has been actively working with the automotive industry OEMs, lamp makers, tier-two suppliers, and human factor experts to develop automotive lighting standards. These standards have been widely used or referenced by the U.S. federal or state governments in establishing and enforcing the lighting regulations. PIAA has long striven to develop lighting product that not only produces outstanding performance, but also comply with SAE and ECE (European) standards so you can use them legally with confidence.

There are different classifications of SAE compliance and each class has specific performance requirements, test procedures, and design and installation guidelines. At PIAA, we mainly develop for two Classes; SAE J581 for Auxiliary Driving lights and SAE J583 for Front Fog Lights. Below, you will find PIAA Driving and Fog lights that are either SAEJ581 or SAE J583 compliant.

Always look for the SAE markings in the lens of the product to be sure the lamp you choose is SAE Compliant.
